Description:

Rated E10-Suggestive material Okay, let me say this. In future rants I will try to be more entertaining, as the point of these little rants is to be fun, and not serious all the time. However, yesterday (4/30/07) I saw a movie of Jack Thompson laying blame on video games for the Virginia Tech shooting, with his best piece of evidence in ALL of his cases are these people owned these games. Therefore, the way I hear it, everyone that owns a copy of Goldeneye or Unreal Tournament (both of which I own) will kill. To me, that just doesn't fly. --- To Mr. Thompson, if he happens to watch this movie. Look man, I am a fellow Christian myself. I am also a gamer, one of the people your crusade looks down upon. The point of this movie is not to insult you or make you look insane or anything else. I mean honestly, how could you be a lawyer otherwise? The point of this movie is that I don't think you are seeing the entire picture. Either you are purposefully ignoring these things or are just not seeing the bigger picture altogether. Either way, both are wrong Mr. Thompson. I am simply stating there are other aspects to these shootings you do not acknowledge, and that is why you have this reputation with gamers. Heck, you went and instantly blamed games hours after it happened with NO EVIDENCE WHATSOEVER! How are you supposed to stake a legit claim when you INSTANTLY jump on it!!! ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8hHClQ9wMq4 ) Also, you calling people idiots and jackasses really doesn't help your "good, Christian cause".

If there are kids under 17 getting the games, it's because of the parents being too fucked in the head to read the ESRB rating and find out what's in the game. The rating's there for a reason people!

Truthfully I don't think eliminating violent media would work considering we had folks like: Attilla the Hun Ivan The Terrible Jack The Ripper Al Capone Bonnie & Clyde Napoleon Genghis Khan Joseph Stalin Adolf Hitler

You do realize also that Jack Thompson won't take your comments seriously, because he's made it pretty clear that he thinks that gamers are beyond help. Yes, even the civil gamers. I read a letter that someone wrote to Jack, a civil letter. The moment Jack read that he was a gamer, he wouldn't even give an indepth response to the letter.

I know he probably won't. But ive seen him take some people's small opinions over the top (Penny Arcade is one of his biggest enemies, and it all started over him being mentioned in one of their comics), and who knows? Maybe he youtubes himself (would ya be surprised?) and will see this.

He probably would look at youtube, but he sees your video, he'll twist what you said and make you out to be the proverbial bad guy.

I would like to think he knows better...of course, I assumed he knew better once before, and as you can tell by the first bit of the movie, it left me $5 short.

Jack Thompson has no power. He has been laughed out of court, disciplined by the Florida Bar MANY times, and vilified by many groups to which he claims support.

Except that recently, a kid mailed him a sarcastic threat letter about going on a school shooting. He asks in his letter which gun to use and which game to train on. So, it does give Jack some credibility, unfortunately. I'll send you the letter page.

Your greatest weapon is self-control. Some people's gets eroded over time and they snap. If anything, video games might be 'one' factor but it takes several others to lead to it. It all depends. I consider the violence thing old news. We all know humanity has been too naive in its ways to ever do the right thing.

I agree that it is old news, but SOME PEOPLE keep bringing it up, particularly that of the video game variety. Its funny. I read an old article in a book the other day, a section of it was written by Jack Thompson (around the release of GTAIII). I was in the mood for a laugh, what with it being finals week, so I read it. I was shocked to find his article was basically saying that the parents need to step it up and see what their kids are playing. I dont get him anymore.

actually, Thompson DID go after music in the early 90's. He went after 2 Live Crew for their song "Me So Horny"

I knew that, but that was the only instance on record, and it was 15-16 years ago. Music is as much of a player in it all as it was then, and yet Jack hasn't wagged a finger in it's direction since 2 Live Crew. He also went after...I think Ice Cube for "Cop Killa", and got it kicked off too, if I am not mistaken.

I seriously hope Thompson sees this video. Seriously. How does a video game "train" you to kill someone? Take Doom for instance: somehow I doubt that you will be taking on Cacodemons in real life. I could be wrong, but whatever. Everyone has control over their own actions, Jack. Unfortunately, some people have no self restraint or conception of the difference between fiction and reality. You have this strange delusion that video games cause every atrocity.

Did video games cause the Holocaust? Did video games cause 9/11? Did video games result in the Killing Fields in Vietnam? How about the Salem Witch Trials? Yeah, didn't think so.

A REAL good movie on the subject is Gamers Unite Parts 1 and 2 by PBC Productions (I have a link to them on my channel), its about a group of gamers that got together to object to the image of gamers being what Jack Thompson has cast them as, they said the breaking point was in fact, Jack blameing games for V-tech.
