Vespucci se maravilló al ver sus rancherías palafíticas características y exclamó la frase con consecuencias históricas: "Encontramos una población edificada sobre el agua como Venecia". Alfinger visitó sus rancherías en 1529 y los llamó "onoto" por su costumbre de pintarse el cuerpo. Antiguamente, los asentamientos de los añú se hallaban a lo largo de toda la costa occidental del Lago de Maracaibo e islas de la Bahía del Tablazo. Hoy se concentran en el noroeste del Estado Zulia, tanto en rancherías palafíticas como en tierra firme: desde la Laguna de Sinamaica, ciénagas vecinas y el río Limón, hasta Carrasquero, Campo Mara y El Moján, e islas de la Bahía de Urubá; el Barrio Santa Rosa de Agua y barrios vecinos, en Maracaibo; y en la costa noroeste del Lago de Maracaibo, desde Curarire hasta la desembocadura del río Palmar. Los añú contemporáneos son aún gente de agua y pescadores por excelencia. Según las informaciones históricas, su o organización social se asemejaba a la de sus vecinos wayúu, también lingüísticamente próximos. Hoy, con pocas excepciones, los añú han dejado de hablar su lengua y sólo hablan español. Sin embargo, junto a otros patrones culturales tradicionales, ellos conservan dos patrones importantes: la vivienda palafítica y la pesca como actividad económica principal. La vida de la mayoría de los añú se sigue desarrollando sobre el agua, que surcan con sus canoas tradicionales y modernas embarcaciones. El pescado constituye siempre la base de su subsistencia; también lo comercializan y juegan un papel importante en su suministro al mercado regional. Igual sucede con la fabricación de embarcaciones, otra especialidad añú. . Además ellos venden un gran volumen de cocos producidos en los cocales que cultivan en las fértiles tierras ribereñas de su región. Las pintorescas rancherías añú sobre la Laguna de Sinamaica se han, transformado en atracción turística de la región zuliana. Los paseos en lanchas por este hermoso laberinto acuático se anotan como obligatorias en el programa de todo visitante a esta región. La población añú actual es el cuarto grupo étnico más grande del país. Esta cifra, que supera ampliamente las anteriormente asignadas a los añú, se logró determinar gracias al operativo preparado para el censo de la población wayuu, el cual barrió en forma sistemática los Municipios Mara y Maracaibo -donde los añú se encontraban dispersos- e incluía el sector poco conocido de Curarire/Río Palmar. (This is a clip from Rosen's speech before the New America Foundation the day after his article was the cover story of the New York Times magazine on Sunday, May 13, 2007) From NewAmerica.net: While the public gaze is fixated on the reasons for and success of the Iraq war, few policy analysts, commentators, and journalists are paying attention to the largest refugee problem in the Middle East since 1948. New America Foundation Fellow Nir Rosen-internationally recognized for his groundbreaking journalism on Iraq since the beginning of the war in April of 2003—will present his piece titled "The Flight from Iraq" which is the cover story in the Sunday, May 13, 2007 edition of the New York Times magazine. The figures are startling—nearly 2 million Iraqis have fled Iraq for neighboring countries and another 1.9 million Iraqis have been internally displaced amounting to roughly 15% of the Iraqi population abandoning their homes. Meanwhile, since 2003, the United States has only allowed in 466 Iraqis. Compounding the damage to Iraq, the greater issue of concern is the destabilizing effects this will have on Iraq's neighbors who have absorbed both the refuges and the political and economic baggage that accompany them. This all leads Rosen to contend that the spillover from the Iraq war has already transformed the Iraq War into a regional conflict. |
