Description:

Mike Tyson came into the ring tonight with one thought on his mind: no mercy. Tyrell Biggs came into the ring with a slogan on the back of his robe: ''Realize Your Potential.'' Mike Tyson came into the ring tonight with one thought on his mind: no mercy. Tyrell Biggs came into the ring with a slogan on the back of his robe: ''Realize Your Potential.'' No mercy won - and won big, as Tyson methodically pounded Biggs until a knockout at 2:59 of the seventh round ended their scheduled 15-round bout at the Convention Center. By the seventh round, it was not a question of whether Iron Mike would finish Biggs, but only of when. Tyson had been landing booming lefts and rights all night, with hardly a combative response from Biggs. A left hook and a right uppercut by Tyson knocked Biggs onto the canvas and through the ropes toward the end of the seventh. As Referee Tony Orlando counted, Biggs's co-manager, Lou Duva, leaned through the ropes and screamed: ''Get up, get up!'' Biggs got up, just in time to run into yet another of the vicious left hooks that Tyson had been landing with impunity. This one sent Biggs reeling backward several steps and finally onto the seat of his shorts. And this time, Duva had seen enough. He climbed into the ring, just as Orlando was waving an end to the bout one second before the round expired. 'I Wanted Him to Remember' Tyson seemed to savor the destructive beauty of the job he had done on Biggs. ''I could have knocked him out in the third round,'' Tyson said. ''But I did it very slowly. I wanted him to remember it for a long time.'' That malice aforethought was the result of what Tyson perceived as tactless remarks in the recent past by Biggs. ''He didn't show any class as a professional boxer,'' Tyson said, ''so I made him pay for his actions with his health.'' At the end, Biggs was hardly the picture of health. Blood was streaming down the left side of his face from a cut over his eye, his lower lip was bleeding and there was swelling and a trickle of blood on his right cheekbone. ''By the third round, I knew I had him,'' Tyson said, ''because when I was hitting him to the body, he was making noises. I knew I was affecting him a great deal.'' Asked what type of sounds Biggs had made, Tyson said: ''Like a woman screaming.'' With the victory, Tyson remained undefeated, with a record of 32 victories, 28 by knockout. Biggs is now 15-1, with 10 knockouts. A Symbol of His Failure For Tyson, Biggs represented the disappointment of his amateur career. Biggs, as a superheavyweight, was a gold medalist at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles; Tyson had failed to win a berth on the United States team that year when Henry Tillman twice decisioned him in the box-offs. Tillman went on to win the gold medal in the heavyweight class. Tyson believed that he was the victim of bad decisions in both losses to Tillman, because of what he viewed as the politics of the amateur boxing establishment. And he believed Biggs symbolized the fighters who, unlike himself, had the backing of the potentates of the amateur sport. Presumably Tyson's bitterness over that period of his career will be alleviated by tonight's triumph. It may also quiet recent criticism that marked Tyson as a beatable fighter. Against Biggs, he was impressive. With the victory over Biggs, Tyson can now look forward to a busy 1988 itinerary that will carry him beyond American shores. But first Tyson will fight the former heavyweight champion, Larry Holmes, in a bout that is expected to take place on either Jan. 22 or Jan. 23, depending on which bidder - Caesars Palace, the Las Vegas Hilton or Trump Plaza here - secures the live television rights to the bout.
